so for those of you who don't know, my birthday is towards the end of july, and because my boyfriend was unable to make it to my family birthday dinner, he invited me over for dinner to celebrate with his family.
i swear this is the most touching gift anyone has ever given me.
i'd arrived after work, and he point blank refused to tell me anything about what we were having for dinner that night. he was being all mysterious and stuff, and keeping me in one place and watching a movie until dinner rolled around. at which point i walked out to a three course meal, organized by him and his sister. the tomato soup was pretty good, and the entree turned out to be mushroom risotto, my favorite savory food. (Mmmm, mushroom risotto, how shall i describe thee?)
but the biggest surprise was dessert.
i had excused myself to use the washroom, and when i came back out, justin started singing "happy birthday". the room was dimmed, and as i walked out into the living room, there was a glorious 6in cake with my name on it and a tasteful gold candle glowing atop it. as justin and his family sang and urged me to make a wish, i found out that he had baked the cake parts of the incredibly sweet third course.
what you all need to realize is that justin doesn't cook. he doesn't bake. he doesn't even know how to wash blueberries properly. and he has gone and made the effort to bake me cake (albeit from a betty crocker make mix, but- baby steps, everyone). i was so moved i almost cried. almost.
the only thing that stopped me was kelly's consistent warning of "it's melting it's melting!" which, of course, flipped my culinary switch into action mode and propelled me into cutting the cake into 4 pieces and quickly lifting it
off the platter and onto plates.
i love this guy.
this has been the best birthday present ever, and the first cake someone else has made me for my birthday.
so justin- stop asking me if the cake was good. it was fantastic and i think it's just made my week.
mmm. baking date this coming/next week? because admit it. you may have made a mess, but making that cake was fun.
i love you <3
